Establishing an electronic system for managing chemicals and hazardous waste in SEZAD

The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) announced today the launch of two new services on the electronic portal of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). This endeavour comes in line with the digital transformation programme implemented in the zones overseen by OPAZ. This reflects its continuous efforts to automate the procedures related to investors. 

In this regard, Eng. Ahmed bin Harib Al Balushi, In-Charge of Managing Operations of the Control and Compliance Sector at the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, said, “The first service comes as an inventory of chemicals, while the second is forming an inventory of hazardous wastes. Introducing these two services comes post completing the electronic system for managing chemicals and hazardous wastes in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm”.

“Both services contribute to achieving the proper management of hazardous chemicals and wastes, as well as facilitating the procedures for investors when sending their periodic reports about data and information on hazardous chemicals and wastes. Moreover, these services will serve providing information to the relevant government and private bodies in the Sultanate of Oman about data related to chemicals and wastes, both in terms of its types, quantities, or importing countries, the purpose of dealing with them, in addition to the classification of wastes, its quantities, source, and methods of treatment”, Al Balushi commented.

He further remarked that the new system contributes to facilitating the process of managing, monitoring and controlling hazardous chemicals and wastes, especially the prohibited chemicals, which will help the Sultanate of Oman in general and OPAZ in particular to meet the requirements of international agreements ratified by the Sultanate of Oman in cooperation with the concerned authorities. The system also helps in saving time and effort, increasing efficiency, and establishing a national inventory for hazardous chemicals in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD).

On the other hand, Mohammed bin Abdulmajeed Al Hooti, In-Charge of Managing the Operations of Applications and Digital Transformation Department at the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, pointed out, “The new system will be developed in the future in a way that keeps pace with the increase in the number of industrial projects in SEZAD. Further, the digital transformation plan implemented by OPAZ is streamlined with the efforts of other concerned government plans”.

He added that the electronic services provided by OPAZ contribute to accelerating, organising and simplifying the pace of business in the way the digital government seeks to achieve. Al Hooti also noted, “This year will witness introducing other services that will contribute to stimulating the business environment in the special economic zones and free zones”.
